STORM DAMAGE BUILDING REPAIR
The City of Sammamish is working to facilitate permitting for repairs to storm damaged buildings. The City Manager has issued an Emergency Proclamation to provide flexibility through the permitting process to prioritize processing permits for storm damaged buildings.
1st Step - Damage Mitigation: Do this now. This includes work to remove fallen trees, support damaged structures and prevent further damage from the elements and may be done prior to applying for a building permit. Please see separate hazardous or storm damaged tree removal webpage. Please do not apply permanent finish materials that conceal structural repairs without first obtaining permits and passing inspection from the Building Department Inspectors. Please remember to take lots of photos to document the damage and the steps taken to clean up the site and seal off any open areas from the weather.
2nd Step - Damage assessments (optional): The City of Sammamish offers optional damage assessments for residents to determine what permits will be needed for repairs and if a licensed architect or engineer must be consulted for a repair design. These damage assessments are not mandatory, and you may submit a repair design without one. Please send an email to PermitTech@sammamish.us to request a visit by a Building Inspector to perform a storm damage assessment.
3rd Step – Obtain a permit for repairs: The building code allows the use of like kind materials for repairs where the use of such materials does not cause an existing structure to become unsafe or less compliant with the provisions of the building code than the existing building or structure was prior to the damage being repaired. Any alterations from existing will be required to conform to provisions for new buildings as applicable. To apply for a permit for repair of a storm damaged building please see the submittal checklist for residential damage repair for further direction on how to obtain a permit.
