Non-Functioning Signals

When traffic signal lights are out or nonfunctioning, it is crucial to handle these situations to ensure everyone's safety. All drivers must come to a complete stop and then proceed cautiously. It is important to follow the right-of-way rules to navigate the intersection safely and effectively. Here is a guide on what to do when you encounter a nonfunctioning traffic signal.

When Signal Lights Fail

Signal light failures can be caused by various incidents such as inclement weather, traffic accidents, power outages, and equipment failure. Understanding what to do can help prepare yourself for these situations. The Revised Code of Washington (RCW 46.61.183) has requirements for vehicles entering an intersection without power. It is to be considered as an all-way stop. The following are some steps to stay safe when the traffic lights are out.

Treat as an All-Way Stop: When an intersection has an all-way stop, it means that each driver should come to a complete stop before proceeding.

Proceed with Caution: When it is your turn to go, proceed through the intersection with caution. Be respectful and careful to workers on site. Look in all directions to ensure it is safe before moving forward and stay vigilant of others.

Yield to Emergency Vehicles: Always give the right-of-way to emergency vehicles approaching the intersection (RCW 46.61.210). Every other vehicle shall yield the right-of-way.

Watch for Pedestrians and Bicycles: Make sure to give pedestrians time to cross safely. Vehicles shall stop and remain stopped to allow them to cross the roadway (RCW 46.61.235).

Report the Issue: Call the City Hall and provide the details (e.g. time and location) of the nonfunctioning traffic signal light. If it is an emergency, call 911 immediately. For minor issues, use the My Sammamish App to report your concern. Prompt reporting helps us address these issues quickly and improve safety for everyone.
