Apply for City Council Position 1

Introduction

The City of Sammamish is seeking applicants to fill the vacancy of City Council Position 1. This is a temporary appointment which will expire upon certification of the November 2021 General Election. Interested residents must apply by 5:00 p.m., February 24, 2021.

General Information

The Sammamish City Council is elected at large by the community to represent their interests. The Council selects one of its members to serve as Mayor and another to serve as Deputy Mayor. It also appoints members to Advisory Boards, which advise the Council on various matters.

The City Council selects the city manager to act as the chief executive officer of the city. The City Council sets policy for the governance of the City and relies on the city manager to implement the Council's established policies and regulations. Regular council meetings are held on the first Tuesday and third Tuesday of each month at 6:30 pm, with a study session on the second Tuesday at 6:30 pm.

Significant time must be set aside for reading and researching as well as for Council meetings, study sessions, and other meetings. The personal rewards for serving on the Council can be fulfilling, and you will receive a modest salary (the annual salary is $15,381.57).

Minimum Requirements

To be eligible for a City Council seat, a person must be a registered voter of the city at the time of submitting his/her application and have been a resident of the city for at least one year.

Appointment Process

To be considered for the Council position, please submit an application packet including a City Council application and a letter of interest detailing your interest in being a Sammamish Councilmember. You may include discussion of any civic or other experience. Once the application process is closed, Councilmembers will review application packets and select the top candidates for public interviews. These final candidates will be asked to participate in a public interview at a Sammamish City Council meeting.

Deadline

Completed application packets must be received by the City of Sammamish by 5:00 p.m. on February 24, 2021. No applications will be accepted after this date and time.

**PLEASE NOTE: if you are interested in running as a candidate for position 1 in the General Election, you must file for your candidacy with King County Elections. Filing week will be May 17th – 21st, 2021. This application and temporary appointment process do not take the place of filing for candidacy.
