City Council Establishes Sustainability Commission

In a significant move towards a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future, the Sammamish City Council approved an ordinance on November 14, 2023, establishing a dedicated Sustainability Commission. The Sustainability Commission will operate as an advisory body of seven members appointed by the City Council. Its mission is to guide and recommend measures to meet the sustainability needs and goals of the Sammamish community. Regular meetings are scheduled for the second Thursday of each month, excluding August. The Commission will be able to conduct offsite visits to local sustainability projects, utility facilities, and partner organizations to enhance their understanding of sustainability issues.

The Sustainability Commission's primary responsibilities include implementing and monitoring the progress of ongoing initiatives like the Climate Action Plan and Urban Forest Management Plans across the city. The Commission will provide valuable guidance and recommendations to the City Council on sustainability issues to ensure effectiveness and responsiveness to the community's evolving needs.

Next Steps and Opportunities

Prospective commissioners can apply through the City's online application process. Commissioners will serve staggered four-year terms, with the initial term lengths ranging from one to four years.

The Planning Commission has identified potential priorities and work plan items for the Sustainability Commission, and they will develop a detailed work plan in 2024. The City plans to report progress towards sustainability goals in 2027, 2030, 2035, 2040, 2045, and 2050.

This initiative marks a significant step forward for Sammamish in its commitment to a sustainable future. Establishing the Sustainability Commission reflects a community-driven approach to environmental responsibility, ensuring that the City remains at the forefront of progressive and impactful sustainability practices.
