Council Adopts Three Resolutions Opposing Initiatives 2066, 2109, and 2117

On Oct. 1, 2024, the Sammamish City Council held a public hearing and adopted three resolutions expressing opposition to three statewide initiatives on the ballot for the Nov. 5 General Election.

Resolution R2024-1069 expresses Council’s opposition to Initiative 2066, which would repeal or prohibit certain laws and regulations that discourage natural gas use. If passed, this initiative would limit the City’s options for addressing its Climate Action Plan goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. As of 2019, approximately 40% of the community’s emissions were generated from residential and commercial natural gas use.

Resolution R2024-1070 expresses Council’s opposition to Initiative 2109, which would repeal an excise tax imposed on the sale or exchange of certain long-term capital assets by individuals who have annual capital gains of over $250,000. If passed, this initiative would eliminate the funding collected from the tax that currently goes to K-12 education, higher education, early learning, childcare, and school construction.

Resolution R2024-1071 expresses Council’s opposition to Initiative 2117, which would repeal the state’s landmark Climate Commitment Act. The Act has supported the City’s sustainability initiatives through grant funding and it supports the City’s climate and sustainability goals in its Climate Action Plan. Repeal of the Act would result in significantly reduced funding statewide for climate projects focused on improving clean transportation options and addressing environmental justice and health inequity.

By opposing Initiatives 2066, 2109, and 2117, the Council aims to protect the City's ability to address climate challenges and support essential public services. Learn more about the Nov. 5 election and register to vote at kingcounty.gov/elections.
