Synthetic Turf Replacement

Project Update

Construction of the Eastlake Community Sports Field 3 - Synthetic Turf Replacement is now complete! The project involved the removal and replacement of the existing artificial turf on the multi-purpose field. This is the City's first field using a natural cork infill material.

Project Summary

In late summer 2021, the City executed a design contract for the Eastlake Community Sports Field 3 - Synthetic Turf Replacement project. Work under this project included removing and replacing the existing artificial turf on the multi-purpose field, installation of a new supplemental elastic layer pad system, and modifications to portions of the damaged perimeter fencing and netting.

This project was completed in partnership with Lake Washington School District. Similar to the turf replacement at Eastlake Community Fields 1 & 2 in 2016, the City took the lead role in overseeing the design and construction administration of the project.

Background

In 2004, the City of Sammamish and Lake Washington School District entered into an Interlocal Agreement (ILA) which allowed for joint use of the Eastlake High School fields. The City agreed to pay the majority of the costs to improve fields 1 & 2, in exchange for community use of the District’s facility. Both parties share maintenance costs in proportion to their respective use, and all revenues are retained by the City. When the ILA was first created, Fields 1 and 2 were natural grass practice fields. In 2006, in partnership with the District, the City converted this practice field into two multi-use synthetic turf fields.

Subsequently, a city-wide ball field analysis in 2008 recommended that Field 3, which at the time was natural grass, be considered for redevelopment with artificial turf and lights. The study ranked this baseball field as the highest among all field projects being considered for redevelopment in the City. Following this study, the ILA was amended to include the renovation of Field 3 to synthetic turf with lights. In 2012, Field 3 was converted to multi-use with synthetic turf. Having been in use for 10 years, Field 3 was showing signs of disrepair and needed to be replaced.

Budget

A total of $1,680,000 is allocated in the 2023-2024 Parks CIP budget for the Eastlake Community Sports Field 3 - Synthetic Turf Replacement and is inclusive of all planning, design, and construction costs.
