Summary

The City of Sammamish updated rules across the City’s park system to encourage positive behavior in parks and trails, keep public places safe and welcoming, and maintain the high quality of maintenance and cleanliness for all park properties.

The City worked with staff across multiple departments, researched examples from other cities, and solicited feedback from the community Parks and Recreation Commission. Through this process, the City gained an understanding of what changes are meaningful, manageable, and critical for creating a safe and enjoyable environment for Sammamish residents across the City’s park system. Residents also had the opportunity to provide feedback to help City staff evaluate and consider changes to City park rules.

Project Background

Since the City's incorporation there have been few updates to the City Code related to park use. As a result, the City has been facing difficulties with responding to issues that impact our parks today.

In order to address these issues, the City clarified and modernized existing laws, added new rules to address current and unforeseen issues, and removed regulations and language that are no longer relevant. The changes repeal and replace the current rules with a new section in the City Code (SMC Title 7A: Parks and Recreation) and include 21 new chapters arranged by topic.

More information about the City’s efforts in updating park rules can be found in the public meeting summaries of the Parks and Recreation Commission:

Proposed new park rules as of February 16, 2021 (SMC Title 7A: Parks and Recreation)
