What is a CAG?
A CAG (or Community Advisory Group) is a group of community members who will provide guidance and input on critical topics such as the creation and refinement of policies, goals, and regulations. Generally, the CAG is made up of a diverse group of community stakeholders that bring a range of perspectives and expertise.
The City will be utilizing a CAG to assist in the development of the City’s first Climate Action Plan (CAP) and ensure it is responsive to the community’s needs and priorities.
How will the CAG be formed?
The CAG will have 12 members, seven of whom were nominated by the City Council and five that will be appointed through an administrative process led by the City Manager. Each nominee needed to submit a personal interest statement to ensure the group perspective is balanced. Members appointed through the administrative process will also be asked to provide personal interest statements and will be individuals or representatives of organizations with an interest in climate change, including government counterparts, community leaders, business owners, and environmental organizations.
Why is it important for the City to have a CAG involved in developing the CAP?
The CAG is a tool to engage and involve the community in developing a CAP that responds to the needs and priorities of the City. The CAG aims to facilitate the exchange of information and ideas about climate change's impact on the community, identify and prioritize actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and develop sustainable solutions. The CAG will provide regular reports on its progress and offer opportunities for community feedback and input.
The CAG brings numerous contributions to the CAP:
-
Local knowledge and expertise: Community members bring a wealth of local knowledge and expertise to the table, which can be invaluable in identifying and addressing the unique challenges and opportunities related to climate change in the City.
-
Inclusion and equity: CAG members are selected to reflect the diversity of the community and are tasked with ensuring that the CAP benefits all members of the community.
-
Increased transparency and accountability: Members of the CAG will gain a unique insight into the City’s decision-making processes and will help shape the strategies that will impact the City’s future.
-
Better outcomes: The CAG will help develop more effective and sustainable solutions to address climate change as the group is able to identify and prioritize right-sized and Sammamish-appropriate actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate the effects of climate change in the community.
